In China you would normally live in the countryside to work in the fields. The owners of fields would normally pay taxes even though there were no lords. Also they had to work a certain number of days in public works down by canals and roads; they also served

The rich and poor lived in similar housing. Most of the houses were made out of earth foundations, timber framing and use of bricks and tile were seen through China, but all the houses looked different even though they were made out of the same materials. In the houses they try to make it as easy as possible to live in the climate that is sometimes inhospitable.

MenIn china men would run the household and have complete control over the women.
The jobs that men could do were to be a scholar, teacher and be in the army, they could also be a farmer but generally if you were a farmer you would be poor. In these families there would be kids and boys were the most important because they would carry out the family name. If poor the men would normally work as a farmer. |
WomanThe only role for women would to be slaves for their husbands and make sons, so they could carry on the family name.
Women would work at home on tasks like preparing the food, cleaning and looking after children. They were expected to have many children and most were pressured to have a son. Girls would get no education and can get left on the street to die or drowned. Spinning weaving and sewing were common occupations. Some peasant women would work in the fields with their husbands |
